Ralph
Ralph was born in June 1991; we adopted him when he was 9mo old. He was the only dog sitting very quietly in his run at the animal shelter. I’ll tell you what, the minute that dog left the shelter he went nuts, it was like the drugs just wore off. He was jumping and running in circles, he didn’t calm down for months. He has a very short attention span and it seems as though everything we tried to teach him went in one ear and out the other. We worked very hard trying to get Ralph to retain even the most basic of obedience commands. I joke with people and tell them Ralph is my Special-Ed kid. I think  people become very fond of Ralph because he's a little slow. These days he just wants to kiss everybody and get up in their lap. I call him "Ralphie" and his favorite thing is hiking in the woods.

* Ralph died March 28th 2005. He began limping almost a year before and it got worse and worse, his muscles atrophied and the vets couldn't figure out what was going on. He became incontinent or it was just that he couldn't stand up to go outside, he didn't have the strength. Then he went into kidney failure and/or liver, I can't remember. It was a very long winter for Ralph and me and he missed not being able to go for walks. I put him to sleep here at the house surrounded by his family.
